2001年世界1,3-丙二醇的生產能力約14萬噸/年,生產廠家僅有美國Shell公司、DuPont公司和德國的Degussa公司。2001年世界PTT需求量為20萬噸左右, 1,3-丙二醇需求量為7.2萬噸。據殼昌敬牌公司預計,到2010年包括非纖維應用在內,世界PTT的年需求量將達到100萬噸,需1,3-丙二醇36萬噸。其中近45%應用于地毯,50%以上用于其它紡織領域。業內專家指出PTT纖維將是21世紀重點發展的新型纖維,將成為最流行的纖維品種之一。

近年來國外1,3-丙二醇和PTT生產以及技術開發的高速發展,已經引起國內有關生產廠家和科研單位的高度重視。預計到2010年我國化纖地毯的需求量將達到5000-6000萬m2,需各種化纖原料290-350萬噸,如10%的化纖地毯原料以PTT來代替,約需PTT 29-35萬噸,折1,3-丙二醇的需求量為10.4-12.6萬噸。

1,3-丙二醇現在主要用于生產新衡迅遲型熱塑性聚酯,即聚對苯二甲酸丙二醇酯(PTT)。1,3-丙二醇是國內外生產和技術開發的熱點產品,其下游產品PTT可以部分取代尼龍,競爭力強,咐李有非常廣闊的市場前景。
